Adelaide Fringe - $35 Million Impact on SA Economy!
15/07/2010
It’s big, it’s back and it’s better than ever! In 2011, the Adelaide Fringe is looking to grow the $35 million impact it had on the South Australian economy in 2010.
Today marks the official countdown to the 2011 Adelaide Fringe.

Announcing the success of this year’s festival, Adelaide Fringe Chair, Judy Potter, said “I am delighted to announce that the 2010 Adelaide Fringe again confirmed its place as a critical component of Adelaide’s arts and cultural landscape with continued growth in numbers and a significant social and economic impact on the city of Adelaide and State of South Australia.”

“This year audience attendance to free and ticketed Fringe events continued to grow, reaching almost 1.1 million with over 300,000 tickets sold.” said Ms Potter.

Adelaide Fringe Director, Greg Clarke, said “As one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, the Adelaide Fringe has once again set the benchmark providing a massive boost to the economy. Plans are now well underway to build on this exceptional result in 2011.”

The economic impact of the 2010 event increased by 28 % on the previous year, based on expenditure associated with the event from attendances, entertainment, accommodation etc.

“Equally important is the benefit in terms of its impact on the local economy through the generation of tourism expenditure, and consequently through the creation of jobs and incomes, amounting to $9.5 million in new incomes and an extra 116 fulltime equivalent jobs.” Ms Potter said.

The Adelaide Fringe continues to build its reputation as a world-wide platform for artists and for the State of South Australia, bringing in more than 8,900 new visitors.

BankSA (Adelaide Fringe Principle Partner) Managing Director, Rob Chapman, said “the Adelaide Fringe had an undeniable feel-good factor, giving extra impetus to an event which had grown stronger since going annual, and injected enormous vitality and energy into Adelaide.”

“It’s fantastic to be part of such a dynamic event which generates some serious momentum for South Australia. We’re looking forward to another brilliant Fringe in 2011.’’ Mr Chapman said.

Mr Clarke announced an exciting new free Fringe event, Wonderland, will light up Rymill Park on the opening night of the 2011 Fringe.  Also new in 2011 is a stage in Rundle Mall built around a 1960’s caravan that will showcase Fringe performances.

With even more innovative, creative and outstanding events set to be announced, the 2011 season is shaping up to be the best yet!
